“We produce some of the most innovative, complex camera technology in the world, let alone in the UK,” says Andy Humphries, Managing Director at MAV Systems. This proudly British company’s automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras are the result of cutting-edge research and continue to lead the industry, thanks to their ease of installation, reliability and superior technology.
Alongside its pioneering research and production capabilities, the company puts its success down to “the MAV experience”, a strong partnership with customers. “MAV works closely with its customers and supports them over the long-term,” says Humphries.
Established in 2008, MAV oversees the production process at its Kent headquarters, from development to manufacturing to support. The workforce is predominantly local, with training and apprenticeships for employees. “We invest in people,” says Tracey Silk, Finance Director. “It’s good for the company, but it’s also good for them.”
MAV’s cameras are used by the police throughout England, including in the Ring of Steel, the City of London’s security cordon. They are also used by local authorities to monitor traffic flow and produce data analytics, which can inform the building of new housing developments; and their ability to differentiate between electric and non-electric vehicles helps cities with the planning and monitoring of low-emission zones. While the company’s business in the UK is its foundation, MAV works with partners from Australia to Monaco, supporting smart city development, car park management, policing and security, and civil enforcement to meet the evolving needs of traffic systems.
The company’s latest innovation in camera artificial intelligence for law enforcement, security and safety is the MAV AiQ. Instead of capturing images using optical character recognition and comparing them to a national database like a conventional traffic control camera, the AiQ learns on the job. “We’re not just checking a number plate with the DVLA – that’s only as good as the database – our ANPR engine learns the make, model and colour and it offers the unique capability of identifying vehicles with Ghost Plates,” says Humphries. This technology sets the company apart and, in keeping with its collaborative ethos, was developed to meet customers’ needs. “The recognition and loyalty we earn is all part of the MAV experience.”
